Emoti

For this project, children’s learning of emotions and emotional regulation strategies were explored. From difficulties identified, key topics of emotional regulation and learning were chosen. Emoti is an interactive device that helps children from age 4 to 7 manage their negative emotional behaviours and learn about expressing emotions positively.

During research, different topics such as emotional recognitions, regulations, communication, learning, difficulties, and management were explored. Research was done through literature reviews, interviews with parents and early learning staff and observations. Key results identified during research were that children start learning emotions and regulation strategies at the age of 3 to 5 and they are not yet capable self-regulating in stressful situations during in their early learning stages. Some problems and difficulties identified during interviews and observations were that some children are not capable of positively expressing emotions in some situations and their negative emotions lead to violent and expressive behaviours. These violent behaviours negatively affect people around and obstruct classes stopping teachers from completing their tasks. Violent behaviours also create negative impact on children’s peer relationship. Many difficulties due to children’s intense and negative behaviours in classrooms or households were identified. Therefore an interactive device that can help children from age 4 to 7 to learn about expressing emotions and manage their emotional behaviours was designed.

Functions of Emoti
Emoti’s voice function allows children to interact with the device when they are experiencing negative emotions. Emoti can recognise dialogues and give short responses and change to required modes. It can be connected to picture books for learning mode. It will read the book to the child and ask questions about situations and related feelings. Parents can fully access the child’s learning record, dictation records and general settings through the app by connecting their smartphones to the device using bluetooth. Emoti’s compact and durable design allow children to easily carry around the device to be used anywhere.
