BounceBack

The BounceBack is a cheaper and easier to use option for fall detection, it improves confidence, happiness and ultimately quality of life for the elderly. It creates more of a desire to wear it because it is modern and stylish and can be customised to suit their outfit.

Problem

The highest number of recorded falls each year by an age group is by the elderly. This can be for many reasons, including, visual or hearing impairment, walking and gait issues, balance problems and other injuries. With the occurrence of falls being so frequent in this age group, and a growing number of them living independently, there is a huge push for fall detection devices. Currently, the market holds many fall detection devices, but they look like they belong in a hospital and are too expensive for the average pensioner.

Solution

The solution is the BounceBack fall detection device. Constructed using drop resistant materials, it is a suitable candidate for the elderly people.
Utilising 3-axis accelerometer and gyroscope, this device detects changes in velocity – such as sudden stops – and will contact nominated people who then can contact emergency services or come to assist. With customisable screen display, it is highly user friendly which ultimately creates more of a desire to use it. They can change it to suit whatever they are wearing, for example it could be worn as a brooch or even as a commemoration pin on ANZAC day.
It uses pin and belt hook options because it can give a more accurate reading, minimising the chance of a false alert. This is because it will move with the body not independently like a necklace would.

App

The app is both simple and easy to use, utilises a similar colour scheme to the product and allows the user to add contacts who will be called when the device detects a fall. It also allows the user to change the image, pattern or colour which is displayed on the screen when the device isn’t in use.

The user adds contacts through it and when a fall occurs, it will call these people. When the call goes through they can choose to send emergency services immediately, or they can choose to go check on the user themselves.
